My friend Steve Raisch has an amazing website, all about the background of the original Pre-State Leather License Plates. Steve covers the background history for the states that actually required the vehicle owner to fabricate or purchase from an outside vendor the plates that were to be affixed to their vehicles. If you want to find out more about the history of Pre-States, I suggest that you visit Steve’s Website. Be aware that, at this time, his website covers only the years 1901-1910. If you have an original leather plate and are interested in learning more about it, or you have any plates you’d like to sell or have appraised, Steve Raisch is the person to contact. The majority of the states continued with their Pre-State programs well up into the teens. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the history behind this interesting time when the owners provided their own license plates.
